Dallas Cowboys: Falling?
As of this moment, I am blogging while the Dallas Cowboys are losing miserably to the St. Louis Rams by the score of 31-7. What in the name of Roger Staubach is going on?
We knew there might be some problems with the injuries and with Adam Pacman Jones getting in trouble (again). But with the games coming up, most folks thought that maybe the Cowboys could get past the Rams… I mean, this is a team with only one win.
But that win came last week, against the Redskins. So suddenly nobody’s laughing at the Rams anymore, if they will end up knocking off two teams of the NFC Division that we all thought would get 3 teams in the playoffs.
If they lose this game, there will certainly be some serious issues with the Cowboys because their next few games are not any easier. If they lose this game (and I am blogging with the idea that they will) then they fall to 4-3, and would have to carry the huge load of embarrassment for another week.
Their next game is against Tampa Bay, which is a lot better than people think, and then they travel TO New York. For a team that was virtually guaranteed a Super Bowl, now you have to wonder if they’ll even make it to the playoffs.
Of the remaining 7 games after those three, their best chances of a win come with Seattle and San Francisco. When you add up the division games against Washington, Philadelphia and New York, there will definitely be some shifting going on. Could it be possible that we may see not THREE, but only ONE team come out of this? None of these teams were that impressive lately, with the Redskins losing to the Rams a week before, and New York losing a Monday Night game against the Browns.
Suddenly, this division isn’t as tough as we thought it was, and this brings the Eagles back in the picture. All of a sudden, Dallas went from a possible 14 win team to MAYBE 10, or 9. Something’s wrong with the Cowboys, and they don’t have a lot of time to fix it.
This is gonna be very interesting because without even seeing the game (since we got the Pittsburgh/Cincinnati game and the New Orleans/Carolina game, we are going to see some fallout from this game, and very likely some implosions. This is a reporter’s dream, although I personally see no joy in pulling out controversial stories in any team. But it’s gonna happen, so get ready for some famous quotes… I am sure the Rams have one about the Cowboys, something Dennis Green once said of the Bears:
“They are who we THOUGHT they were!”
We’ll see what the Cowboys really are after the game, and the next few games.

Greatest Running Back EVER is...
And now, the Greatest RB ever!
I think I have kinda toyed around with you guys enough, we might as well reveal who THE greatest running back in the NFL is.
Remember folks, this started out as the top 25 running backs in the history of the NFL as of 2008, and that is subject to change every season. As time goes on, there will be better players as some of the best begin to slip in the rankings.
Remember also, that my rankings are based on four basic elements: Team accomplishments, Individual Stats, Individual Awards and a penalty for Era adjustment. I went through 63 of the best known running backs in the history of the NFL and ran each through my formula of Team Accomplishment pts + Individual Stats pts + Individual Awards pts and then subtracted the Era Adjustment from the sub total. From this I got my final number and ranked the running backs according to that total.
My scores ranged from zero to over 78. Of course, if you read my last blog on the greatest running backs ever, you know that Jim Brown was listed at #1 with 78 points. When I started this countdown, I had Ladainain Tomlinson at #25 with 28 points. So you can see that there is a 50 point difference between Jim Brown and LT.
Throughout my series of the best running backs ever, I listed several others who didn’t make the list. Before I reveal the Greatest Running Back Ever, I’d like to share a few more that were good, even great, but didn’t make my list, and why:
Tiki Barber: 16 points
Obviously I am sure Tiki Barber wished he had stayed with the Giants just a little longer, if he had won the Superbowl last year it might have put him very close to being on the all time list. But Tiki didn’t score well in the Individual Awards category, with only 3 points. He wasn’t as well decorated as many of the other running backs. His yards per carry was very good, and he is on the top 20 all time in rushing yards. The individual stats element was his strongest point with only 8 points. He does get 5 points for playing in a past Superbowl, but collectively it just wasn’t enough to say he was on the great list. A very good player, yes, but greatest, no.
Bo Jackson: 12 points
Bo knew a lot of things, but sadly he didn’t know how long his career would last when he got that injury that ended not one, but two careers. I still have some of his baseball cards. He was a great player, and tack on that fact that he was playing for my Raiders was incentive enough for me to make him one of my favorite players. But Bo Jackson didn’t make the list simply because his longevity was cut short by his hip injury. He still ranks at the top with yards per carry, and is really his strongest point in this ranking. He gets 2 points for playing in a conference championship and only 1 point for individual awards, plus the 10 points for individual stats. He loses one point for era adjustment so only has 12 points. If I did a top 40 all time, he’d still not make the list.
Chuck Foreman: 27 points
Fans of the old school Minnesota Vikings know this name very well, and Chuck Foreman saw the Superbowl a few times, but just barely missed the cut for the top 25 all time. Why? Well, remember that my #25 was Ladainain Tomlinson with 28 points, so Chuck missed it by the slimmest of margins. Without the era adjustment of -2 points, he would have had 29 points instead of 27. But what also hurts Chuck Foreman is the fact that in the Individual Stats element, he gets no points at all. He’s not on the top 30 all time in rushing or yardage, and averages under 4.2 yards per carry. As I mentioned before, he has seen a lot of post season games and has been “to the top of the mountain”. He just never won a Superbowl. By a paper-thin margin, Chuck Foreman missed my cut.
Now, it’s time to reveal the GREATEST Running Back of our time…at least until someone else takes that spot.
THE GREATEST RUNNING BACK: Emmitt Smith: 88 points
It seems that every era produces a great back, and the 90’s produced the best running back the history of the NFL has ever seen in Emmitt Smith. I never got to see Jim Brown play, but I know he was great. I barely got to see Franco Harris play, and I know he was great. But I DID get to see Emmitt Smith play and I know he is the greatest running back the NFL has ever seen.
Emmitt Smith scored 10 points more than Jim Brown, and I realize that many are questioning the logic. Here’s why Emmitt Smith is the greatest ever:
He did not score the highest score in the Team Accomplishments element, in fact 7 other players on my list of 63 scored higher than he did. But he got 32 points in this element because he did go to, and win three Superbowls as well as going to a conference championship and losing that one. But no one is going to question his value to the team, in fact one year there was a contract dispute between Emmitt Smith and owner Jerry Jones. Emmitt sat out because he was not getting his fair share, and apparently Jerry Jones felt that the Dallas Cowboys could win without Emmitt. After losing the first couple of games, there was a report of a VERY angry Charles Haley, who supposedly smashed his helmet into the wall, demanding that SOMEBODY (hint, Jerry Jones) to get Emmitt Smith back on the team. It was reported that Jerry Jones was nearby when that tantrum happened, and was moved to pay Emmitt what he was worth…he was rewarded with a Superbowl that same year.
In the Individual Stats element, Emmitt Smith scored 21 out of 30 points. He is, at this moment THE all time leader in yardage AND touchdowns. He got 10 points each for those two categories and 1 point because his yards per carry was the very minimum to score, at 4.2. Only the great Jim Brown scores more in this element, and only by one point. Remember, a great player has to get his team to the promised land AND win, as well as making an individual mark as one of the greatest backs ever by his stats.
Finally, there is the Individual Awards element, which shows how much the league recognized his talents. Emmitt Smith scores 32 points in this element because Mr. Smith was clearly seen as the jewel of the NFL on “America’s Team”. But like the Team Accomplishments, Emmitt Smith was not the leader in this element either. Seven other running backs had more points in this element than Smith, including Marshall Faulk with 34 points, Earl Campbell with 37 points and again, Jim Brown with 41 points. But how many people can say they accumulated the NFL rushing crown, the NFL MVP, a Superbowl Trophy AND become the Superbowl MVP all in the same year….
Nobody.
So the argument would be, side by side, why is Emmitt Smith better than Franco Harris? Franco won more Superbowls, right? That is true, but Smith eclipses Harris in both Individual Stats and the Individual Awards element, and then there is that -2 for era adjustment.
So why is Emmitt Smith better than Jim Brown? Surely it might appear that I am penalizing Brown because he never played in a Superbowl. Not true, remember, I award 10 points to winners of the Superbowl AND I also award 10 points to running backs who won the NFL Championship before there was a Superbowl. Jim Brown and the Browns won the title twice…Emmitt Smith won it three times.
And as I mentioned, Jim Brown edges Emmitt Smith by one point in the Individual Stats category, but scores 9 points more in the Individual Awards element. But the era adjustment subtracts 4 points from Jim Brown, whereas Emmitt Smith suffers no penalty.
The difference between Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith is 10 points…the difference of Emmitt Smith’s third Superbowl victory. So the greatest running back of all time…for now, is Emmitt Smith.
I really hope you had some fun with this, remember folks, this is just my opinion based on some ideas, I understand that if 100 people did a similar ranking it would be different 100 times. But I wanted to do more than just SAY who the best were, I wanted to give a case for each, and why they were great. As I said before, this is not meant to disrespect those that have been our childhood favorites or current favorites. We all have players we tend to like more than others. My favorite NFL teams are the Raiders (ugh) and the Saints, so I had to keep my feelings in check on these rankings.
So there it is, the greatest running back of all time…for now. Who knows what the next 5 years will bring? Right now, I have one, maybe two players that are still active. Ladainain Tomlinson at #25 is still active, so he can move up with time, and IF Shaun Alexander has not retired, then he could possibly move up. That means that this may be set in stone for awhile. But for now, my pick for the Greatest Running Back EVER is Emmitt Smith.
I think I have kinda toyed around with you guys enough, we might as well reveal who THE greatest running back in the NFL is.

Speedblog: Pacman Jones
Speedblog: Pacman Jones
Oh brother…
Like a lot of us who are into sports, I have seen the escapades of current Dallas Cowboy player Pacman Jones. Recently there has been a situation where he supposedly punched a bodyguard, which is employed by the Cowboys. I am not gonna get into the details of that, you know as much as I do, or can easily pop to a sports site and get the scoop on it.
But what I did want to do is reflect on if he should be punished, and if so, how long. I watched some sports shows (my favorite being Pardon The Interruption) and their take on the Pacman Jones situation. Most of the opinions seemed to say that he deserves severe punishment.
I can see two sides to this, but I think one of the better opinions came from one of the guys on the show “Around the Horn”. While three of these cats were busy hanging Pacman from the highest tree, one felt that the NFL should try to address the alcohol problem, if it is indeed a problem.
You see, it is too easy for some stuffy old sports writer like some of those guys to think that the world is perfect, and anyone who isn’t should move to Mars. I understand that Pacman Jones has screwed up a few times. Heck, even when he went to work at NWA-TNA for a moment, there were reports that he was a jerk there too. So maybe he ought to reap what he has sown.
But if the police report says there was nothing to warrant an arrest and the Dallas Cowboys feel that it is ok, then why punish the man for what you THINK he is doing? I grant you, he is no angel, but how many fights has the average football player gotten into in his career? Sometimes a violent sport creates violent individuals. If it gets to that, then the NFL must discipline them for the greater good. But come on, were you expecting Pacman Jones to visit homeless shelters and go around healing the sick?
This is tough because you have a guy that might not really “get it”, while at the same time he is a good player. But how much can you tolerate? Dallas knew what they was getting when they acquired him, so I don’t blame the Cowboys for trying to “hide” this problem…if there is indeed a problem.
To me, if the police are saying it’s a dead issue and the Cowboys say it is a dead issue, then leave it be…or just fine him something that hurts his wallet…say 100 large ones. Or just suspend him one game. But some of those guys on the talk shows are saying 4 games or a season…way to go there guys, I think it was Woody Paige who said several times, “we are a forgiving country”. Yeah right, we forgive until you slip up and then we bring it all back to count against you.
I personally think Pacman Jones needs to look at his “homeboys”. Sometimes you get in trouble because of your no-account friends….and that word “friends” is a problem. If they were your REAL friends, then they would be protecting Pacman.
I mean, if I knew an NFL player, and we were really tight, and he’s making NFL money, I’d want to make sure he is protected at all times so he can continue to make as much money as he can, and have the best career as he can. I say that because if he’s my best friend, then he’s gonna look after me too, right?
That’s not a selfish thought because he’s my friend BEFORE the money came in. But I also have to realize that he is now an investment to himself, and those around him. So us going to the “club” might not be the best thing. But that’s not to say I should discourage him from ever going out. After all, he’s a grown man.
I really think maybe the Cowboys and the NFL need to see who Pacman Jones surrounds himself with…who are his “friends”. A bodyguard is not a friend, merely an employee. Personally speaking, and I know this is just my opinion, but I think Pacman Jones’ problem isn’t so much alcohol (as far as we know) but the friends he surround himself with. And if his friends are only concerned about hanging out at the club or strip club or acting like a gangster or rapper, they could be using Pacman Jones’ influence and money to live a life they themselves cannot afford.
So is he guilty? Who can say at this moment. I think the Commissioner of the NFL needs to suspend him again, for one game because it is clear that he punched the bodyguard. Sometimes the only way to get a man’s attention is to hit his wallet. But the severity of this incident does not warrant 4 games, not if you have forgiven him for the past…that means you don’t bring it back or count it against him. Didn’t he already pay for that by losing a year?
I am not an Adam Pacman Jones fan, but until things are clearer, I do not agree with some of the sports writers to burn him like a witch in Salem. I say suspend him one game, or until the investigation by NFL is cleared. He gets taught a lesson because he IS at some fault here, and hopefully the media stories will embarrass him to try to keep out of trouble…the rest is up to him.
Anyway, it’s just a thought…gotta run…

Best NFL teams this week...again
Top 10 NFL teams this week
Well, as of October 1st, 2008, I want to chime in on who I think the top 10 teams are in the NFL. I know ESPN has their power rankings, but I tried not to look at that on their ticker so I can make my own list.
By the way, if you have not read my blogs on the greatest running backs ever, check those out, I am up to the top 15 so I will be getting back to that soon.
Also, we have witnessed Monty Burns (Al Davis) finally firing his head coach. The way he went about it was, in my opinion, totally childish. How can an old man act like a 5 year old? I hope Kiffin sues him for 50 million dollars…well, we know he won’t get that much, but I hope he sues Al Davis and wins. And mind you, I am a Raider fan, but I do NOT like how horribly Al Davis has been running that team.
Anyway that is for another blog, here are my top 10 NFL teams this week:
#10 New England Patriots(2-1)
Yeah, they lost to Miami in bad fashion, but any team with one loss is still in the hunt, and this is still the AFC team that everybody remembers. I know there is serious quarterback issues and the team is struggling, but when the champ is down you better figure out how to knock him out, rather than just marvel at his wounds…lest you get knocked out yourself.
#9 Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1)
I would have put these guys higher, much higher but they are going to have some serious issues with health. That means that at this moment, they are NOT as good as they should be. I was wondering that with all the running back problems that even my phone might ring to see if I can play. These guys are good, but nobody wins the Superbowl with injuries like this.
#8 Denver Broncos (3-1)
I would have put these guys lower, especially with that embarrassing loss to the Chiefs, but this is the NFL, every team is professional (so the theory goes). There are certainly some flaws with the Broncos, but I think they are in a better position than Pittsburgh, only slightly. The only quality team they beat was the Chargers, so they have a lot to prove.
#7 Buffalo Bills (4-0)
Yeah, I know these guys are one of 3 undefeated teams in the league, but the teams they beat are currently 4-11. They beat two teams that recently fired their coaches. When they get to 6-0 or 7-0, then we can talk about top 5. The season is still very early. I’m just not convinced that these are the real McCoys.
#6 Baltimore Ravens (2-1)
I know these guys lost to the Steelers, but with the defense these guys have, this is a very tough team to deal with. If they can just get a little more offense, these guys will be a serious threat. They give you only about 14 points a game if you are lucky, hard to beat a team in the NFL with just two touchdowns. But the also average just a bit more than that, which makes for close games.
#5 Washington Redskins (3-1)
With the impressive win over the Cowboys, everything looks to be shaping up for the Redskins. Their only loss came early, and fans can easily forgive that. But is this team really for real? They are in a very tough division, and they will be tested beyond those of mere mortals…ok that was corny, but they are pretty good.
#4 Tennessee Titans (4-0)
I am just not ready to make these guys the best team in then NFL. A close win over Jacksonville, and wins over Houston, Minnesota and Cincinnati are not really that impressive if you want to be THE best team in the NFL. It can get you to the playoffs, but not the Superbowl. We’ll see if this trend of winning continues for the Titans.
#3 Dallas Cowboys (3-1)
An embarrassing loss, and the media feeding of TO and his whining have put a damper on the team many thought was almost a shoe-in for the Superbowl. But you just can’t rule out major rivalries like the Cowboys vs. Redskins. This is a very tough division and I think each team will beat each other up, so this won’t be the only loss Dallas will receive.
#2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1)
This might be temporary, but the Buccs seem to be pretty good. They beat some pretty decent teams in Chicago, Green Bay and Atlanta. I bet Warren Sapp would like to be there for one more year. But I wonder if the QB is going to last. Once the league gets the film on Griese, I fear they will have “figured him out”…ask Aaron Rodgers and Derik Anderson…
#1 New York Giants (3-0)
The Giants beat the Redskins, then piled the points on the Bengals and the Rams…not that impressive. But the defending Superbowl Champs get the nod because as a famous wrestler, Ric Flair, once said…
“In order to BE the man, you gotta BEAT the man”
So until somebody beats the Giants (and it may be sooner than you think) I have to give them considerations for being the best team in the NFL…the defending Superbowl Champs deserve that if they are still undefeated, right?
Anyway, that’s my list. Anybody watch that college football game on ESPN with Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee State…WHAT A GAME!
Anyway, gotta jet….
