Top 10 NFL teams this week

Top 10 teams in the NFL Today

There is no official top 25 or list of the best teams in the NFL, but it bears watching to see week by week the best teams in the NFL. I think this is purely speculative because one of the biggest factors in this is health, something New England has learned first hand. Like I said before, often times the best team is the healthiest.

So in light of the games today (and the big upset with Miami spanking the Patriots), who are the best teams in the NFL…as of today? When I made my initial list of the best teams in the NFL, my list contained 12 teams, but I had to cut off two in order to make my list.

Since I like to rank stuff (as you may see in later blogs) let me count down the top 10 teams in the NFL, from 10 to one:

#10 Bills (3-0). This sounds kinda harsh putting an undefeated team this low, but beating the Raiders, Jags and Seahawks doesn’t really make for a scary schedule. We know they have to go through some tougher tests, but right now they are at least in the playoffs…if it ended today.

#9 Buccaneers (2-1) This might be a surprise team even though they lost their first game to the Saints, which I believe was more emotional than skilled. They are in a pretty decent division with the Panthers and Falcons, so they could climb the ladder if they hold form.

#8 Patriots (2-1) A very embarrassing loss to the Dolphins might be the clear flaw in the armor, and let’s not forget, the Jets had a pretty good chance of beating them too… this could be the beginning of a very disappointing season for them.

#7 Titans (3-0) The perfect record seems admirable, but the opponents are pretty soft. The Jags, Bengals and Texans almost sound like something Notre Dame would hook up to get some easy wins. The Titans can’t help how other teams play, but they seem to be a firm lock for the playoffs.

#6 Broncos (3-0). I actually wanted to put them much higher because I figured with injuries in the AFC, this could be as good a chance as any for Denver to win a ton of games. But with wins against the Raiders, the Chargers and Saints, it isn’t that impressive right NOW…but that can change in the next few weeks.

#5 Giants (3-0) WHAT? The defending Superbowl Champs this low? Sure, it’s just a few games in, and with their defense in question, along with the very tough division, I can’t see them being the best right now anyway. Beating the Redskins is some proof, but the Rams and Bengals are hardly any real credibility right now.

#4 Steelers (2-1) A loss to the Eagles is nothing to be ashamed about, and right now, I think the Steelers are the best team in the AFC…if they stay healthy. All the pieces seem to be there, but if they can just stay healthy, I can easily see them in the playoffs, and likely in the AFC Championship.

#3 Eagles (2-1) These guys are like the Steelers, if they are healthy they can be a very, very good team. They gave the Cowboys all they could handle, and I believe they can beat the Cowboys. A win over the Steelers proves they are a top notch team, and a strong contender to the NFC crown.

#2 Packers (2-1). I actually should flip the Packers with the Eagles, because personally I think the Eagles are better than the Packers right now. The Packers defeated the Vikings and the Lions, and didn’t impress me much on those victories. But most of their team is still there minus a key component (ahem…Brett….) so they are still a good team. They’ll go as far as Rodgers leads them.

#1 Cowboys (3-0) This was pretty easy because after all, they beat the two best teams in the NFC…and I won’t count the Browns as a big win. As many will say, this seems to be the Cowboys’ year…barring injury. But I do think they are beatable, the Eagles, Giants and a couple of others could take them out. All it takes is one loss in the playoffs and you’re history.

Two teams I left off were the Falcons and Ravens. I know the Falcons are playing well, but beating the lowly Chiefs and the Lions is NOT impressive as far as making a dent in the NFC…but you gotta start somewhere.

And for the Ravens, even with a perfect record, beating the Browns and Bengals at this time of year is kinda soft. I didn’t say the Ravens were soft, I just said their first two wins were not of great quality.

Oh, a sad day in football today, today the Browns, Bengals, Colts, Chiefs, Bears and Steelers all lost today…all headed by African American coaches. It is a very odd stat to bring up, with African American coaches in the NFL being 0-6 today. I hope the fans of each of those teams won’t try to add something stupid up and just support their team. Mind you, MY favorite teams are the Raiders and Saints, but as I said before, I pull FIRST for humanity before I pull for any team. Let’s hope this does not discourage the NFL to think less of these men and continue to allow the best men become coaches, whether black or white….

It’s quite clear that the NCAA does not believe in this…

But that is for another blog….

My NFL fix!

My NFL Fix

By the time I post this blog, the NFL day would have begun and there are a lot of interesting stories out there that has bubbled even before the season began. Since I started my blogs kinda late, I am a few weeks into the season, but already there are a lot of very interesting stories.

Around my neck of the woods, people pull for either the Carolina Panthers or the Washington Redskins…personally I am a Saints fan because I was born in New Orleans, and I am a Raiders fan because I used to live in California. Plus I like John Madden!

But I gotta wonder what the heck Al Davis is doing. He reminds me of one of the characters from the Simpsons. How many of you remember the rich old mean man that owns the nuclear plant that Homer works at.

Yeah…Monty Burns….

And what is his catch phrase…. “Excellent”

As maybe in “Commitment to Excellence”? Probably not, but I just thought I’d throw that in there.

As much a big fan as I am for the Raiders, I think it was foolish for them to hire a guy like Art Shell, and NOT give him the authority to run the team. I have heard from many people that Al Davis wants to run the team, and hires coaches to pretty much be his puppets. Well…if he wants to coach so bad…why not come down to the field and COACH?

And it really is a shame because with the offensive weapons as QB (Russell) and a couple of excellent running backs in Michael Bush and Darren McFadden, this is a very, very powerful set to have behind the line…but not if the rest of the team is questionable. I honestly believe if Al Davis would just take his hands off the steering wheel of the Raider bus, they’d win a few games more than he’d think.

Now, what about the Green Bay Packers?

When I heard what the management did to Brett Farve, I personally wanted them to lose every game this year. I don’t say that against Green Bay fans because I remember one of the fans saying something that makes a lot of sense.

When they asked people about the Farve Fallout, many of the fans expressed deeply how much they love Brett Farve, but because the Packers were all they had, they had to be hopeful for whatever changes that were made. So Brett Farve or Aaron Rodgers, they had to pull for whomever was the starting QB.

It was all they had. Put that way, I can truly understand that and appreciate why fans in Green Bay had to pull for Aaron. And I wish nothing against Aaron either, he did everything he was supposed to do. I blame management for being such a butthead in this, because it seems apparent that the coach and the management wanted to “go in a new direction”.

And the odd thing is this; they fixed Brett Farve and the Jets so that their most beloved Packer would NEVER, EVER set foot in that stadium. They sold him completely away from the team and acted like they never knew him. But what happened once he set foot in New York? His jerseys sell like hotcakes and he embraced by New York like a long lost son.

Seeing all that money must have turned the stomachs of the Packer management, because they then offered him a lucrative deal to give Green Bay the EXCLUSIVE rights to his jerseys after he retires.

Pardon me…didn’t you just treat him like crap by getting him out of Green Bay, then turned around and locked and barred the doors Lambeau Field, then bought like 100 vicious wolves trained to attack any Brett Farve smelling person within 100 miles of Green Bay?

But now that management sees the dollar signs Brett is making, they want to act like he is “one of them” and are willing to roll the red carpet to him after he retires…provided he gives them exclusive rights to his jerseys.

Boy, you just can’t beat that American greed. Nothing like it in the world.

Anyway, lots of other stories are out there too, can the Cowboys make it happen this year? If they are healthy, I think they may be the team to beat. But often times I say that sometimes the best team does not make it to the Superbowl… it’s usually the healthiest. We have already seen major NFL players taken out of the season, which is ironic since a lot of the media was up there whining about there being too many preseason games.

It’s like somebody can actually predict when an injury happens. Nobody working for ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports, NBC, CBS, ABC (well, I already said ESPN so that kinda goes with it) or any other sports entity can predict that playing 3 or 4 preseason games tends to increase the chance of injury. Tom Brady is a perfect example.

So this is my first blog of the NFL, before the games begin…let’s see how things unfold….
