Will Navy make it to a bowl?

Will Navy go to a bowl??

If you have not had a chance to check out my blog on the “Greatest Running Back EVER” bounce back a blog to check on that. I am actually kinda excited about it because I have some favorites that I’d like to put in there, but I know may not be #1. I got a few responses on some other favs too, which is always cool.

I hope to have that up by the end of the week, unless some other sports topic comes up that grabs my attention. What I have done so far is make a list of 50 of the best running backs in history…not necessarily in order, just the first 50 that stood out to me. Now I have to run them through my formula and see how they stack up. I’ll tell you more about that when I get to the actual countdown.

Oh, by the way, shame on the New England fans! I remember an NBA player who criticized the Boston Celtic fans for being “fair weather”. He said that as long as the Celtics were winning, everybody acted like they were with the program, but when the Celtics were down, they had no friends.

Seems like winning a few Superbowls wasn’t good enough for the Patriot fans. How can you guys sit there and boo a team that has won like 4.65 billion games in the last 5 years, and have like 600 Superbowl victories! Gosh, it sure doesn’t take long for New England fans to jump off the winning bus. Way to stick up for your team guys.

Anyway, today I was reading some stuff about the upcoming bowls for college football, and I think I counted 34 bowls. That means that 68 teams out of about 120 are guaranteed a post season game. Really? We just ASSUME that these teams will qualify.

Take for example the Eaglebank bowl, to be played in Washington DC. I think this is a new one, because I have never heard of it before, but the way bowls be changing names for some stupid corporate name, you just don’t know. Anyway, this Eaglebank game promises to feature an ACC team vs. Navy.

So you mean to tell me that Navy is GUARANTEED a bowl game.

Did anybody tell NAVY? I mean, you gotta win 6 Division I wins…

(and look folks, I don’t care about the FBS or FSI or CSI or whatever they call it, I am calling it Division 1 teams until I decide to change it…)

Navy HAS to qualify for a bowl by winning at least 6 Division I wins…and last I checked, they were 2-2. With a narrow win over struggling Rutgers, they are even, but look at their schedule:

They play top ranked Wake Forest, then Air Force, then Pittsburgh. I’ll be honest, normally I might give Navy a win, maybe two against these three, but considering they lost to DUKE and are 2-2, I am not as confident they can win any of these games. Especially since those first two are away games. So to me, at the end of those three games, it is quite likely that Navy will be 2-5, but I’ll give them one game in between that, to make it 3-4.

That means they gotta win at LEAST 3 games to qualify, and I’ll augment this with this fact…their first game was against Towson…I don’t think that (should) qualify as a legit Div I win, so they actually need more than 3 wins.

Worst case scenario, Navy would need to win 5 games out of their last 5 just to QUALIFY for that bowl. Can Navy win their last 5 games? I might favor them against SMU and Temple, but unless Notre Dame has collapsed all over themselves, I cannot see Navy beating them. Navy could get Northern Illinois and I think it is a toss up for the Army game.

Folks… it is quite conceivable that Navy may not even qualify for this bowl that has already accepted them. The distance between a successful season (and thus a bowl bid) and a losing season is paper thin. Navy, in my opinion, may have to circle that Pittsburgh game as the keystone to success or failure. Sure, they COULD beat Wake Forest, and to be honest the ACC has been quite soft this year, but I think Wake Forest will win that game. I also think Air Force is too good to lose to Navy this year, so by the time Navy sees Pittsburgh, it may be at a very critical time for those guys.

If they can beat Pittsburgh, they can likely go on to qualify for that Eaglebank bowl…but if they lose, I just cannot see Navy sweeping their last 5 games to qualify. We’ll see. I am pulling for Navy though, I have always respected the Army, Navy and Air Force teams.

Oh well, let me back off the blogging and grab a soda…

(who said sports blogging was hard…this stuff is FUN!!!)
