Glorious day of football!

A Glorious Day of Football

With the last game on television being the Georgia vs. Arizona State game, and Georgia apparently locked in to win, I can take some time to gloss over some of the games I watched today.

The big game around here was obviously the ECU vs. NC State game. I honestly felt that ECU was not really as good as the ranking, and with Virginia Tech and West Virginia not impressive so far this year, it was just a matter of time before ECU found a loss…and they found it 75 miles from home.

I took the time to watch Georgia Tech rip apart Mississippi State, and I think Georgia Tech has a strong vote to finish near the top of the ACC. It’s really a shame that Mississippi State is in the SEC, because I can’t see them winning the next 4 games…which means any chance of a bowl is probably gone.

There were lots of games I bounced around with, but I did not watch the Notre Dame vs. Michigan State game, but I was pulling very hard for the Spartans. I was very glad to see them win and show that Notre Dame wasn’t as great as Lou Holtz predicted.

I took great pleasure watching him sit there on ESPN having to deal with the fact that ECU lost (his son coaches there) and Lou’s former team (Notre Dame) both lost in the same day, both proving that those teams were not as great as others seemed to have thought.

Now don’t get me wrong here, I am not saying that ECU sucks because how many other teams can say they beat two quality teams early this year? I blogged earlier about my questions about this team, because I didn’t believe they were going to go undefeated, in fact I think they will lose again soon. But the argument for Notre Dame was based on Lou Holtz sitting there with those cameras on and with a straight poker face, saying that Notre Dame was going to go 11-0...yeah, right.

How’s that working?

I watched a lot of other games today, from Texas beating Rice to the so called game of Wake Forest vs. Florida State. FSU lost that game because there is absolutely NO offence on that team. And I say this, I LIKE FSU because I like what coach Bobby Bowden has done for that school, but it seems like there are just too many guys on that team that don’t respect or care about anybody but themselves. There just seems to be no discipline on that team. 7 turnovers and over 150 yards of penalties? What’s that about?

And in a way, I am glad they got a dose of reality. They played two Southern Conference teams (WCU and UTC) and slaughtered them by over 100 points total. That’s real cool picking on smaller schools, but now you see that you wasted two games when maybe you shoulda been playing some more quality opponents. With no offense, how many games do you think you’ll win? I really like FSU, but this does not look good for them.

I watched LSU beat Auburn today, so the #10 team in the nation will fall, probably not much. I predict ECU to fall to about #21 and Auburn to fall to maybe #13 or so. All these games were so exciting, and it was worth watching from 12 noon to about now, 11:30pm as Georgia has this game wrapped up.

So the questions start floating around about the best teams in the conferences. If you asked me, I would say this about the “big” conferences:

ACC: Wake Forest SEEMS to be the best team, but I question their offense. I know Virginia Tech beat Georgia Tech, and Boston College isn’t that bad, but of those teams, I think Georgia Tech might have something going on…notice I didn’t say anything about Clemson yet…

Big East: UCONN is undefeated, but I think they are kinda the paper champs so far. But with West Virginia falling apart at the seams, maybe this could be the year for South Florida. Nobody in this conference is scaring anybody, so it’s almost a toss-up right now for the best 3 teams.

Big 10: Three teams jump out, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State. Odd that Michigan has no place there, but that’s the way it is in 2008. Is Penn State for real? Don’t know but it would be cool to see Joe Paterno run up some wins. I still think Ohio State is the team to beat.

Big 12: Oklahoma is the second best team in the nation, so by some level of default they are the best. But Texas looked pretty good today, as well as Missouri and Kansas. Overall I think Kansas is slightly overated, but I say that in a very kind way… I LIKE Kansas and pull for them a lot. I just can’t see them beating any of the other three. If forced to pick, I’d say Oklahoma…for now.

Pac 10: Who’s gonna beat Southern Cal? Case closed.

SEC: Georgia is the better only by ranking, but LSU beat Auburn today. Florida ripped Tennessee and Alabama crushed their opponent today (Arkansas). This is the best conference in the nation, which ironically may not have a team in the championship because they may beat each other silly. This may be the most exciting conference to watch, and right now, I can’t pick a winner.

Oh well, I have to take time to digest all the games today, what a day for football. I will probably talk about some other stuff later this week, but for now, I need to recover from the great games today.
